Building a Snapchat Clone with Expo Camera | React Native Tutorial
Beto, June 24, 2024 · 22,975 views
Snapchat's camera is a masterclass in mobile UX, so I rebuilt it with Expo Camera. Photos, video recording, QR code scanning, a photo library, onboarding, and mode-switch animations, all in React Native with light and dark mode support.
If you want to ship camera features that feel polished instead of bolted on, I build the whole thing in the video.
What's inside
- Show onboarding once using an Async Storage flag
- Handle denied camera, mic, and photo permissions without crashing
- Capture photos with and save them to the library
- Record video with a live indicator, then play it back with native controls
- Scan QR codes in real time and open them in the browser
- Animate the Snap/Time mode switch with Expo Symbols icons
