How to Control AI Image Editing Results with Nano Banana
Céss White, March 2026
When working with AI image editing, most people focus on writing a better prompt for the after. In practice, that is only half of the problem. The real quality of a result is defined much earlier, at the before stage.
The initial image is not just a starting point, it is the reference the model uses to decide what should remain stable. If that reference is weak, inconsistent, or unclear, every modification becomes unstable. This is why good results are not just about “editing well,” but about starting correctly.
Before
A strong source image gives the model something to preserve. It defines the subject, the environment, the lighting, and the composition in a way that can be reused during editing.
If the subject is not clearly visible, or the pose is ambiguous, the model will start making assumptions. The same happens if the lighting is inconsistent or the environment is not well defined. Instead of editing, the model begins to reinterpret the image, which leads to unexpected changes.
A good base image is simple and explicit. It clearly states what is happening, where it is happening, and what the subject looks like. There is no need for complexity. In fact, simpler prompts usually produce more stable results because they reduce ambiguity.
Prompt:
A professional female athlete running on an Olympic track, wearing sleek black sports pants.
This works because it locks the key variables: subject, action, location, and outfit. Once these are clear, the model has a stable foundation to build on.
Seed Result
After
Once the base image is solid, the next step is deciding how much you want to modify it. This is where most issues appear. If the type of change is not clearly defined, the model tends to over-edit, changing things that were not part of the request.
